1994 Rear Tailgate Lock Installation

For whatever reason, the 1994 Defender 90s didn't include a latch on the rear which could be locked from the outside! The other two years had them, but Land Rover made the '94 owners work for it.

I picked up a standard SIII/D90 anti-burst type passenger door latch and a set of three matched lock cylinders. The only tools needed are the standard 10mm wrench and socket, a 1" hole saw, and a file. Since I didn't have a template to guide me, I had to pick the spot to cut the 1" hole by sight only. And it's a close-to-exact fit for the lock! Luckily, it turned out perfectly. Whew!

Here's where the lock goes.

The inside looks the same.

Fifteen minutes and a few parts later, this D90 just got a lot more functional...especially with a hard top.
