DeLorean Restoration DeLorean Photos

Stainless Steel Repair

This task was outsourced ;) My car came with a few battle scars. There was a large scrape on the right-side front fender where it looks like a previous owner ran it against a concrete slab. Also present was a dent in the side of the hood from who knows what.

I had a window of opportunity while on break from college for a few weeks in early 2000 and went shopping locally for anyone who had experience working with stainless steel. The local DeLorean dealer from 1981 is still in business and still had a few of the people from the DeLorean era, but no one in the body shop was still around. I wanted the job done properly and most shops' thoughts on repair techniques scared me. So I emailed the "before" photos below to the guys at DeLorean Motor Company in Houston. They were very accommodating with my schedule and offered to squeeze in some panel repair over a few days at the first of the year, so I planned a quick road trip and drove 1000 miles to Houston.

When I arrived, Stephen took a look at the hood and said that it wouldn't be perfect, but would be better than before. He must have been trying to set my expectations low, because the end result looks fantastic and I was able to keep my original hood with accent lines. They were also spot-on with the estimates that were given from viewing the photos (which were very reasonable).

Fender (before): the fender had a nasty scrape.

Hood (before): The left edge of the hood had this eye-sore.

Fender (after): And this fender is perfect again.

Hood (after): The left edge of the hood turned out extremely well. Unless you know it's there, it's hardly noticable. I'd certainly take this tiny blemish over an incorrect hood.
