Valley of Death Overhaul

It's time for some winter maintenance and this project is long overdue. #6344 was ready for a complete tune-up, so I decided to go all-out and refurbish the valley while I was at it. This project also served as a test-bed for what I'll end up doing on the project car.

Before: quite nasty. Remember that this car spent years as a daily driver and has 82k miles on the clock... and this engine is evidence of that!

Intake off; disassembly is easy ;) I vacuumed the R-12 out of the A/C last fall, so compressor removal was quick and easy.

Furniture lurking in the garage = parts shelf.

The valley is coated in sludge, but no antifreeze is present. Removal of the valve covers revealed... a very clean engine.

Engine parts cleaned, degreased, and painted.

Ditto...

And ditto...

One box of shop towels and a round of POR-15'ing later, the valley is finished!

Water pump and piping back on after some thread repair.

The old pipe was sightly rotten, so the original plan of POR-15'ing was out, so I opted for a stainless replacement. Problem solved.

The new compressor is on and the cooling system is done! Before replacing the intake manifold, I pressure-tested the cooling system. There were no leaks at 14psi, so it's time to continue... All of the old nasty vacuum hoses were replaced with new silicone hoses and the clutch fluid was refreshed with ease.

Almost there... the fuel pump was jumped to pressurize the system and it passed the match test (just kidding).

The "before" picture again for comparison.

Finished.
